Women of Courage, Women of Hope Celebrated at International Women’s Day Event in Slough

Women from across Slough’s diverse communities gathered at The Langley Academy to celebrate International Women’s Day at a special event organised by the Brahma Kumaris in Slough. Centred around the theme “Women of Courage, Women of Hope,” the evening brought together community leaders, speakers, and residents to reflect on the strength, resilience, and empowerment of women.

A highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring six women from different communities who shared deeply personal stories about the challenges they had faced and the resilience that helped them overcome them. Among the speakers, Samina Hussain spoke openly about her journey through cancer and how courage and determination helped her navigate one of the most difficult periods of her life. Hangama Liwal Saam reflected on her journey to the UK and the experiences and challenges she encountered along the way. The panel aimed to empower women and demonstrate how community, hope, and shared experiences can help people find strength even in the most difficult circumstances.

Naweeda Naqvi, Community Connectors Manager at Slough CVS, who also shared her story during the panel, described the evening as “a well-attended, uplifting and inspirational event.” Samina Hussain, Founder and CEO of Sakoon Through Cancer, said: “Honoured to be part of Brahma Kumaris’ first International Women’s Day event, sharing space on an esteemed panel alongside courageous women who vulnerably shared their stories.

“It was a powerful gathering held in a space of safety, healing, reflection, light and meditation — reminding us of the strength that emerges when women come together with openness, compassion and purpose.

“Grateful to contribute my voice and lived experience to conversations that uplift, empower and inspire change.”

Mayor of Slough Cllr Siobhan Dauti reflected: “When you use your voice to advocate for your own rights, you are advocating for all women, including future generations. One voice can make a difference, but when we all stand together, imagine the power we could have to make change.”

The evening also included a short guided meditation that helped create a calm and reflective atmosphere. As the event took place during Ramadan, organisers thoughtfully provided a prayer space and hosted a shared iftar where attendees could break their fast together. The event created a warm and inclusive environment where women from different cultures and faiths were able to connect, share experiences, and support one another.
