Langley College ESOL Students Discover the Power of Volunteering

On Wednesday, 12th, and Thursday, 13th February, Tagreed Ismail, Slough CVS’s Volunteer Manager, delivered presentations on the benefits of volunteering to five adult ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes at Slough and Langley College. The sessions reached over 60 students, providing valuable information on how volunteering can support their personal and professional development.

The presentations emphasised the numerous advantages of volunteering, including opportunities to practise and improve English and communication skills, gain valuable work experience, meet new people, and improve their wellbeing. Additionally, learners were introduced to the Volunteer Passport scheme and were encouraged to explore the Slough Community Directory to learn more about local activities and events.

Following the sessions, Tagreed conducted one-to-one meetings with students interested in volunteering. These personalised discussions allowed students to explore suitable roles that matched their interests and aspirations, guiding them toward meaningful community engagement.

One student, who had previously volunteered, before relocating to Slough, shared their enthusiasm: “I didn’t know about all the activities and volunteering opportunities available in Slough before today! I would really like to volunteer in the community and meet new people.”
