Berkshire High Sheriff Awards – One Slough Winners!

The exceptional work carried out by so many to support those in need in their communities during the pandemic was highlighted in the Berkshire High Sheriff Awards. There were over 100 nominations in six categories from across Berkshire, with Slough groups and volunteers featuring strongly.

The winners of the Berkshire High Sheriff Awards were announced at a virtual ceremony and celebration on Thursday 18th March. We are delighted that there were three overall winners from Slough!

As Aik Saath celebrated the 40th young person to volunteer at Slough vaccination centre this week, the Volunteer of the Year under 30 Winner was 18 year old Aida Ahmed, who has been volunteering for four years at Aik Saath, doing everything from singing for the homeless, baking for the NHS, to working on the murals for the Knife Crime agenda. Aida’s is a truly inspirational story, overcoming personal tragedy and using her experience as a catalyst for encouraging others to make a difference in their community.

The Volunteer of the Year over 30 Award saw two people in Slough recognised. Finalist Becki Blair-Jones, for exceptional volunteering behind the scenes at the Slough vaccination centres, and Winner Malcolm Johnstone, for a lifetime of volunteering, supporting the homeless and those in need at The London and Slough Run.

The New Group of the Year category was open to all newly established groups, supporting their communities in some way during the Covid crisis. We are delighted that two One Slough groups were finalists, showing exceptional support of the community and meeting the needs of the isolated and vulnerable — Haymill Support Group, and Colnbrook Cares who won the category! An amazing achievement and great recognition for the teamwork that continues to be carried out by a team of volunteers from the Colnbrook community, brought together by Cllr Puja Bedi and Joycelyn John.

As we see more needs arising in Slough, it’s fantastic to see the huge contribution the voluntary sector has made. Congratulations and well done to all the nominees, finalists and winners!
