Finding Connection Through Community Calm: From Bereavement and Loneliness to Purpose and Belonging

Following a recent family bereavement, Joyce found herself struggling with loneliness and isolation. Looking for support, she spoke with Naweeda from Slough CVS’s Community Connectors, who listened carefully and referred her to Community Calm in Slough.

That simple introduction became the beginning of a life-changing journey.

“I immediately contacted the group leader who invited me to attend the following week,” Joyce explained. “I have been attending Community Calm every week since.”

Not only did Joyce continue attending, but she also invited her friend Rosemary to join her. Together, they quickly became valued members of the group.

Community Calm offers a welcoming and supportive environment with calming activities including art, gardening, and group discussions. For Joyce and Rosemary, the sessions have had a significant impact on their wellbeing and daily lives.

“This friendly group has had a marked impact on my mental wellbeing and life in general,” Joyce said. “I always look forward to being among the participants.”

The positive impact has extended beyond attendance. Recognising their professional experience, Community Calm invited both Joyce and Rosemary to become volunteers within the group, an opportunity they were delighted to accept.

“We are looking forward to being volunteers,” Joyce shared. “I feel very good about this, as I will be using my professional health skills to assist in running the group. This has given me a feeling of being useful.”

Community Calm leader Meena praised the contribution both women have already made to the group:

“A massive thank you for introducing Joyce to us, she and her friend Rosemary are like gold to our group. Their experience and professionalism is just what we were looking for and they are making such a positive impact on our group.”

Joyce says she is deeply grateful for the support she received and the connection that was made possible through Community Connectors.

“I would like to thank Naweeda for connecting me to Community Calm.”
