The Sangeet Group – Transforming Lives Through Music

Bringing Music, Community, and Wellbeing Together
In the heart of Slough, The Sangeet Group is more than just a singing class—it’s a lifeline for many. Tackling social isolation, dementia, low self-esteem, and loneliness, the group promotes a strong sense of belonging through the power of music. With a mission to uplift, connect, and support, The Sangeet Group Slough provides a safe and encouraging environment where members rediscover their passion for singing, while improving their mental health and overall wellbeing.

Healing Through Song
By organising regular singing sessions, The Sangeet Group brings together individuals from all walks of life—regardless of age, religion, political background, or disabilities. These sessions do more than teach singing; they build friendships, boost confidence, and create a deep sense of community. A light meal accompanies each session, reinforcing the power of shared experiences and strengthening social bonds.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, when restrictions limited social interactions, The Sangeet Group adapted. They held ‘Singing for Fun’ sessions in Upton Park, offering members a safe way to leave their homes and meet others. Additionally, the introduction of the Zoom Sur Sangeet Group allowed members to connect virtually, continuing their love for singing from the safety of their homes. To this day, members join these online sessions every Tuesday, improving their vocal skills through “The Art of Singing” lessons and sharing their music with one another. Good singers even get the chance to perform on professional stages, boosting their confidence and advancing their musical journeys.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves
The impact of The Sangeet Group Slough is remarkable:

  • 12 in-person gatherings annually, each attended by approximately 40 people.
  • 52 weekly Zoom sessions, attracting an average of 35 singers per session.
  • Weekly radio performances on Awaazfm Radio (Southampton) every Sunday from 6pm to 8pm, allowing members to showcase their talent on an international platform.

Changing Lives, One Song at a Time
The difference The Sangeet Group Slough makes is evident in the stories of its members:

Ramesh Thakkar shares, “I have been singing since I was 16 years old and was very active in my college days. However, when I moved to the UK in 1970, my music came to a standstill due to personal circumstances. Just under four years ago, a friend introduced me to The Sangeet Group Slough, and from that moment, my passion for singing was revived. I have come out of my ‘musical depression’ and feel energetic again, enjoying singing as I did in my younger days. Thank you for your encouragement and guidance. My wife and I always look forward to the monthly live singing shows.”

Amrat Vedhar expresses, “I am proud to be associated with The Sangeet Group Slough and all the wonderful friends I have made. Music allows us to forget our worries and enjoy life.”

Subhash Hans remarks, “Being a member of The Sangeet Group Slough has been life-changing for me. I am learning to sing and, in the process, learning to truly enjoy life.”
