ABC to read is a children’s literacy charity supporting primary school children who struggle with reading. Since 2004, trained volunteers have provided one-to-one support in local schools, helping children build confidence, enjoy reading, and develop essential literacy skills.

Alongside this, the charity delivers “Ready to Read” sessions for parents and Buddy Workshops, where older students are trained to support younger pupils—building leadership skills and strengthening school communities. ABC to read is the only literacy charity in Berkshire offering this level of comprehensive support.

This year has been particularly significant, with the organisation winning Group of the Year at the VCS Partnership Awards. It has also achieved the Investing in Volunteers quality standard and Slough Quality Protects, reflecting its strong governance and commitment to supporting volunteers.

The real impact is best seen through individual stories. One volunteer in Slough supported a Year 3 pupil who had developed anxiety around reading and avoided books altogether. Through regular sessions, the child’s confidence grew—by the end of the year, he was reading aloud in class and proudly taking books home. His teacher noted that this boost in confidence had a positive impact across his wider learning.

Support from WAM and SCVS has helped raise awareness of volunteering opportunities, enabling the charity to reach new audiences and attract volunteers. However, demand continues to grow, with more schools seeking support as increasing numbers of children fall behind with reading.

To reach more children, ABC to read is looking to grow its volunteer base across Slough and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. Ongoing support with promotion, community connections, and raising awareness will be vital in helping the charity expand its reach and continue transforming lives—one reader at a time.
