What they do
The Afro Caribbean Heritage Society Thames Valley delivers cultural awareness, education, wellbeing activities and community outreach, creating welcoming spaces where people can connect, learn and feel supported.

Why they started
The Society was founded to tackle isolation and the lack of accessible education, awareness and clear, trustworthy information, as well as the need for safe, inclusive spaces to celebrate Afro Caribbean heritage. Led by Joycelyn’s determination to bring people together, the aim is to build understanding, confidence and stronger community connections across the Thames Valley.

Who they support
The Society supports local residents of all ages, including families, young people, older people and communities whose voices aren’t always heard, as well as professionals and community leaders. Their activities are open to everyone, creating inclusive and welcoming spaces that celebrate and bring together different cultures through shared social connection.

How WAM GI and SCVS has helped
Volunteers are supported to complete the Volunteer Passport, giving them the skills and confidence to work safely with the community. Many volunteers have also been recruited through the volunteer platform, helping the organisation grow its reach and capacity. Training has played a key role in their development — Joycelyn has completed accredited Level 5 Leadership & Management and governance training, alongside a range of other learning opportunities, showing a strong commitment to continuous development. With this support, the Society has built strong foundations, formed valuable partnerships with local groups and businesses, and started working more strategically with the local council to raise their visibility and strengthen their presence in the wider community.

The impact
Through committed volunteers, strong leadership and the local CVS support, the Society has expanded its activities, reached more communities, gained community trust and credibility, also gained national media recognition, and made a lasting contribution to inclusion, wellbeing and community cohesion across the region.
